Pioneering Company Gets To The Heart Of Carbon Projects
By Emma Murphy 1st Sep 2009

As consumers become increasingly conscious of their carbon footprint, many companies are seeking to improve their carbon credentials and voluntary offsetting is increasingly popular. But to many offsetting remains intangible; how can you calculate the exact environmental impact of a purchase and where does the money from your offset actually go?

Piqqo, a pioneering company based in Brighton, sets out to change all that by getting to the heart of carbon projects. Offering a new concept to this rapidly developing field, Piqqo have launched a carbon-neutral labelling system that offers customers the chance to make a real difference with every purchase. Each label displays the exact carbon footprint of a product and assures the consumer that every gram has been offset with a handpicked project.

Piqqo then go one step further by offering a way to see each offset in action. Every label carries its own serial number that can be entered on the Piqqo website, linking consumers to videos documenting the offset project they are supporting. Projects range from cows that generate electricity to kindergartens saved by solar power, wind farms in India and reforestation in Uganda.

‘I wanted to make offsetting fun, exciting and engaging.’ explained Managing Director and Co-Founder of Piqqo, Richard Stephens. 'Our projects are about more than just offsetting, they have the potential to change people's lives and carry a range of additional environmental benefits.'

Carbon-conscious companies have been quick to catch on. Ethical clothing line Miksani launched their carbon-neutral range at this year's Pure London, the UK’s biggest fashion trade show. 'We're already fair-trade and organic, so going carbon neutral was just the next step!' owner Katie Weightman explained. 'I chose Piqqo because I love the way they connect directly to the carbon projects, after all that's what it's all about.'

Stephens and his team at Piqqo are working with their clients to offset a variety of new products. Tea, coffee, milk and cereal are in the pipeline so the world’s first carbon-neutral breakfast may be on its way...
